1950's
Philadelphia
,
American
Bandstand
became
the
first
national
television
program
directed
at
teenagers
. The
show
brought
rock
and
roll
into
American
living
rooms
,
shaped
the
way
a
generation
danced
and
dressed
, and
became
the
defining
image
of
teenage
culture
for
millions
of
viewers
. At the
same
time
,
however
,
American
Bandstand's
racially
discriminatory
admissions
policies
prompted
protests
from
civil
rights
advocates
and
sparked
a
decades
long
controversy
over
how the
show
should be
remembered
.
